Our Passenger Rights are clear, consistent, transparent and fair for passengers and air carriers because travellers who fly from, to, or within Canada have a right to uniform treatment, regardless of the air carrier they fly with.
Travelling by plane can be expensive for Canadian families. Travellers deserve stress-free, fair, and consistent treatment. Back in July, our Government launched the first phase of strengthened air passenger rights to better protect Canadian travellers. This included better treatment during tarmac delays, and fair compensation for lost and damaged luggage.
The final phase of the new air passenger rights will ensure that fair compensation standards are in place for those who give up their seats voluntarily, and will ensure that no one is involuntarily removed from an airplane due to overbooking, as well as new rules regarding children’s seating and additional new rules for situations when there are delays and cancellations.
These regulations will apply to all airlines that fly to, from, and within Canada. Airlines that do not follow these rules could face penalties of up to $25,000. We will continue to ensure every Canadian can access air travel that is easy, safe, and reliable.
